On-line Spring conference 2025
Saturday May 10th 10:00 – 16:00
‘The mechanisms of UK government .’
Have you ever wanted to write a political thriller, or pen an erudite analysis of some aspect of UK law-making, locally or nationally, only to realise that you don’t know enough to be able to describe it in suitable detail?
So, how do our MPs and local councillors go about raising matters for discussion, pointing out problems with existing legislation, or proposing new laws? Do you know? Are you sure?
Our next SOMW conference aims to change all that. Entitled “The mechanisms of UK government” it aims to give attendees a grounding in exactly how our representatives are chosen and elected; how policies are created, challenged and refined in local, national and international government; the regulations governing all this — and also, crucially, what it feels like to be an individual MP or councillor embroiled in it.
Our speakers all have experience of this: Andrew Rosindell, MP, will speak about local politics and how he progressed to national politics;
Dr Chaand Nagpaul CBE, from the BMA, will describe his medico-political journey; and Suzanne Evans, Director of Political Insight, a public affairs consultancy, will be describing procedures, regulations and the rules of behaviour both in the Commons and in local politics.
MPs’ and councillors’ relationships with the media will also be covered, as will international mechanisms; relationships between MPs, other organisations and scientific bodies; and SOMW President, Dr John Lockley, will be describing the steps individuals have to take in order to become a political candidate, either as an independent individual or as a party member.
There will be ample opportunity to question all the contributors.
